Team TOOTOO Fund

The Team TOOTOO Fund was founded by Jordin Tootoo, the first Inuk player in the National Hockey League (NHL). Established in 2011, the fund honours his late brother, Terence, who died by suicide.

Key activities and focus areas of the fund include:

Charitable grants: Provides grants to various charities that focus on suicide prevention and supporting at-risk youth.

Mental health advocacy: Raises awareness about suicide prevention, mental illness, and addiction, particularly for youth in Northern and Indigenous communities. Tootoo has been vocal about his own struggles with alcohol addiction and recovery.

Anti-bullying activities: Supports efforts to combat bullying.

Inspiring youth: Encourages youth to stay in school and pursue their dreams.

Tootoo has been recognized for his work with the fund.

In 2016, he received a Meritorious Service Medal through the Order of Canada for his efforts to promote healthy lifestyles in the North and to inspire conversations about mental health and addiction.
