Jordin Tootoo carved his name into hockey history as the first Inuk player to compete in the NHL, breaking barriers for Indigenous athletes and inspiring communities across Canada and beyond. Born and raised in Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, Jordin’s path to the NHL was forged through adversity, discipline, and cultural pride. Between 2003 and 2017, he played 723 NHL games with Nashville, Detroit, New Jersey, and Chicago, earning the respect of teammates, fans, and opponents for his relentless work ethic and fearless style of play.

But behind the spotlight, Jordin faced significant personal challenges, including the loss of his brother Terence and his own battle with addiction. In 2010, he made the courageous decision to seek treatment—an act that reshaped his life and set him on a path toward healing and purpose.

Today, Jordin has shifted his focus from professional hockey to powerful storytelling. Through speaking engagements, community events, book tours, and premiere screenings of his feature documentary TOOTOO, he engages audiences in honest conversations about mental health, trauma, identity, and resilience. His message is rooted in lived experience and Inuit values, making his impact deeply felt in schools, Indigenous communities, corporations, and organizations across North America.

Jordin continues his mission through speaking tours, partnerships, and the Team Tootoo Fund—advocating for suicide prevention, youth empowerment, and culturally relevant supports for Indigenous peoples. He remains a symbol of courage, leadership, and hope.

The whole process has really brought us closer together, as a family. Yes, there were a lot of tense moments, but we've also learned how to communicate and walk through experiences verbally, rather than the silent treatment or [by] disappear[ing] for a couple of days until things settle down. This whole process has allowed my family to be okay with not being okay."
